They ARE part and parcel of the genre. So I just don't read them.

Yeah, I mean, I don't care if it's standard...it's still awful.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 05:05 am (UTC)(link)
There are actually a fair number of titles now that don't have any costumes like this. Lots of artists are very consciously steering female costumes away from the boobs and butt aesthetic.

That is some beautiful art. Source?

What Kate Beaton comics?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh.

OP

Actually, they were the ones where she makes fun of Dagger's costume by having it fall partly off at inopportune moments.

The Cloak and Dagger ones, iirc.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-28 11:07 pm (UTC)(link)
That lady is scary looking.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I think if it was just the occasional physics-defying lady costume it would be fine.

It's the fact almost all the women are dressed like that, 8 to 80.
It's the fact they're posed provocatively at the expense of visual storytelling.
It's the fact that Wonder Woman amazonian strongwoman and warrior is drawn with the exact same bodytype as Lois Lane.
It's the fact none of this apply to the guy characters.

It's lazy, it's sloppy, it's bad design, and it's sexist.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
its soooo lazy

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 03:58 am (UTC)(link)
Well, you have to find the ones that aren't that way. They do exist. It's just like picking through fanfic for stuff that isn't seme/uke incest.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 05:06 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, but published stuff should be having someone picking through that for me. I shouldn't have to wade through hundreds of comics of seme/uke incest to find something better, there should be people getting paid to do that.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 08:49 am (UTC)(link)
I'd not say that is a fair comparison. Comic books are known for their gratuitous depiction of female characters, whereas seme/uke incest is a very specific type of fanfiction. In fact, I'd say you'd have to go looking for it. For example, if you walked into a comicbook store and picked up a comic, chances are, the female character is gratuitously drawn. If you go onto archiveofourown.net and picked a random page, changes are, it won't be seme/uke fic.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
+1. I don't care if Emma Frost dresses that way, but it makes no sense for most characters. And the only male character it seems to apply to is Nightwing. Fortunately, most artists are veering away from this style these days, but there's always Greg Land to keep the genre alive.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it's a good way to turn girls off superhero comics, so I guess it succeeds. Yay, boys-only club? Juvenile and sexist genre killer? I mean, whatever float teh old boys club boat.

I literally don't care if it's part of the genre; I won't read anything like that.

That is a terrible outfit, if she's actually out fighting crime in it.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-29 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
It would be fine on, like, a fashion runway. But protecting one's chest in a fight or from projectiles is pretty important. Also, that mask isn't a mask - it's actually a step down from glasses. And that fringe could get caught in something or used as something to grab and keep ahold of her, same with the hair.

She's primarily a cat burglar, not a combatant. And that's an exaggerated version of the costume.

Same. But then I've been a Spider-Woman fan since I was little, and she was consistently drawn in a blatantly painted-on costume for years.

That said, a lot of the newer Marvel costume designs, like the current Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Spider-Woman costumes are actually really well done.

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 04:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Spider-Man also has a painted on costume so it seems more forgivable.

The funny thing to me about double-sided tape or spirit gum or what-have-you as an explanation is that it makes getting in and out of costume a fairly involved process and I imagine these scenarios where there is some big threat and half the super team is like "Wait, I gotta go GLUE ON MY COSTUME." I mean, I figure it takes Batman a bit of time to get into his armor (unless he can change instantly whie sliding down a fire pole like on thge TV show) but you woudn't expect someone who just wears maybe a unitard and boots to need to go to a lot of effort.

(Then there's the characters who wear their costumes under their normal clothes all day. If things are taped on, that's gotta get really itchy and uncomfortable).

When I first saw Dagger, I fell madly in love with her costume. The dagger-shaped cutout seemed so freaking cool and I wanted to wear my own version. Granted, I was about twelve--but to this day I still love that costume.
