Death Note spoilers

I liked the anime ending a lot, but I was super pissed that they did not include the flashback with Ryuk and Light talking about how heaven and hell don't exist at all, all humans become nothingness when they die. I felt that was an extremely thematically important part of the climax, it was really frustrating that they cut it.

I might be remembering wrong but I thought Ryuk had tricked Light by saying something about "do you think anyone who uses a Death Note will go to either heaven or hell?" and making him think that it's only people like him who don't go to either, but really no one does.

Yep! He does say that in the beginning, which is supposed to lead Light and the reader to thinking that Death Note users can't get into heaven or hell, like they are cursed or something. But the flashback during Light's death scene in the manga goes back to that conversation (or one soon after, when Light is still young) and Light says something along the lines of, "Oh Ryuk, I figured it out, heaven and hell don't even exist, do they?" And Ryuk is surprised and admits they don't, and says all humans go to "MU" (nothingness). These are the final rules in the Death Note (used between manga chapters and also included in the commercial break messages in the anime), too.

It's an interesting and important backtrack from the Christian symbolism which was used throughout the series, as the series takes a more Buddhist turn. And it's an interesting contrast because it shows only humans are giving "divine" judgment to other humans, the "real" gods (Shinigami) don't give a shit and heaven and hell don't even exist, all humans are equally insignificant upon death.

Oh I completely forgot about that flashback.

Interesting that Light accepted that so easily when he had spent most of the series setting himself up as someone separate from the rest of humanity.

I really do think it's interesting. Because it shows Light realizes his actions only matter on earth and he isn't actually a god. Also that he realizes he won't suffer any eternal consequence of doing so lol not that that was slowing him down anyway

but the very point is that he only accepts it as a phrase, in a kind of youthful nihilism. at the point when he dies, he has grown up, has accumulated all kinds of connections and posessions, and, like all adults, is bound to life by them, and doesn't want to die, doesn't want to admit that he is on the same human level as all other humans and go out of life as an equal with them, even though he has worked so hard to surpass them.
