When you start eating healthier you generally tend to eat a lot less, actually.

This happens for a few reasons:

1. Eating more complex carbs and less processed sugars means your blood sugar is more even and you don't suffer the crashes which lead to sugar cravings (usually translated as being hungry by your brain).

2. Eating better usually means a better intake of micronutrients. When you have a lot of deficiencies happening you tend to be less satiated and prone to specific cravings which cause people to overeat.

That's nice.

I spent a year eating 1500 calories a day of lean protein, whole grains, vegetables, and very limited sugar.

I lived in a near constant state of hunger, cold, and constipation.

1500 calories a day is pretty low, you probably needed much more than that if you were constantly hungry.

Oh my. One whole year in decades without stuffing yourself full of empty calories and processed shit?

You're so brave.

Don't be such a fuckhead, so have no idea what their diet's been "for decades."

don't do that sort of diet. it's stupid. try eliminating (or at least reducing to a pont where it's only a rare exception) stuff like sodas, reduce portions of sweets (smaller slices of cake) first. Have a look at where else you might be eating unneccessary amounts of fat or sugar on a regular basis, like eating a lot of deep fried stuff or processed meats, fruit or vegetables with added sugar and try substituting these with regular fried and unprocessed stuff. Try eating only stuff that tastes good and not force yourself to eat steamed vegetables because "they're healthy" if you don't like them. Pan-fried with olive oil is completely healthy.
Then, start doing something in the way of exercise. It will help with the cold and constipation-thing. Just walking is a great start. maybe cycling because your radius is bigger.
Once you've found a diet you can live with you can try and reduce a bit of calory intake in a way that is compatible with your lifestyle. Like, I could never not eat after 6 in the evening, so I'm never even trying that "foolproof" method of losing weight. Instead, because I used to have uni at 10, I would not eat breakfast but drink coffee and water in the morning, and get right to lunch after class. one meal less with a bit of hunger in the morning, but I had lunch to look forward to. Lost 10 kilos in a year without ever feeling like I was on a reduced diet.

You're right, that sort of diet is stupid and unsustainable. Now I'm trying to take steps like those you mention here, and it's working better.

People like Herpy love to preach their One True Way, but one type of diet doesn't work the same way for everyone. I've found that a diet proportionally high in fats keeps me feeling fuller and keeps my bowels moving, even when I eat less.

Yep. I eat a lot less now that I'm not eating much junk food because what I eat actually fills me up and keeps me full longer so I don't feel that constant urge to snack.
