Re: Source material changes you can't forgive

The especially irritating thing to me about the moron love triangle in the Hobbit movies is that WE COULD HAVE HAD SOMETHING REALLY GOOD THERE. The part where Kili and Tauriel were talking in the dungeon was sweet and understated and it felt natural. But it should have stayed understated and sort of private between just the two characters, and we shouldn't have had people discussing it, and we certainly shouldn't have had to suffer through the ridiculous "why does it hurt??" "because it was real" interaction. Having her quietly grieve on her own for what never was and might have been, maybe have it implied that Thranduil and/or Legolas understands but is/are going to keep quiet about it out of respect for Tauriel's privacy, would have been so much better and honestly deeper than what we got. And we did NOT need any ridiculous implications that Legolas was interested in Tauriel. Granted I chose to interpret his behavior towards her as friendly concern rather than romantic jealousy, and you can do that without being rudely shocked out of that interpretation, but I KNOW they were going for love triangle and it makes me so mad. There were so many good things about those movies, but it really shows how they had to hastily throw them together at the last minute because of the messiness with the director thing.

I agree. I would've been happy if it had been a friendship (although my Legolas&Gimli soul would be sad). I wanted an exploration of Elf/Dwarf relations but they did everything they could to make Kili not a dwarf and Tauriel is barely an elf. No one comments on it. There are no sacrifices either has to make. Kili doesn't stand up to Thorin because he learned to value Tauriel. Tauriel doesn't mention Kili to Legolas when Kili's not there. It was so paint-by-numbers and even then, it failed.

I choose to think of Legolas as a concerned employer because I didn't see anything that looked like friendship between them. But, yeah, they made him this creepy asshole. It would've been better if he hadn't been in the movie.
