But if he could get to the sibling, what was to stop him from helping Sarah escape and eloping with her instead of taking the kid? That would seem to make more sense.

Maybe he wanted her to come to him? Or maybe (for the first one) he wanted to make sure he had a kingdom worthy of her before she came.
