i was a theology/lit major who now studies education i never get to solve problems i always just have ruminate for 16 pages on 10 words in 1 corinthians, or 22 pages of wild but excellently cited speculation on the community that might have produced the gospel of john, or a lot about historical inevitability and its place in russian philosophy and literature, or the nature of knowability in melville, or the singularly painful exercise that is wringing a feminist reading from faulkner

or this useless history of education final that ain't even my damn department

Is it bad that I just blanked on your whole paragraph because that's way too intense for me?

My finals were all about "hey here's the bridge span, depth, height, Design a bridge. GO!"

Or you know other variations. Or let's not have a final, congrats, you showed up to class!

i am what they call jealous

all you really need to know is that you were designing bridges, an item of endless practical applicability, i've spent the bulk of my 23 years doing thinks that would be considered legitimate grounds for insanity outside the context of academia

I also learned about how to manage a construction site and budget and design steel buildings and concrete buildings and about 100 year floods and what they really mean (it means a 1% of occurring every year, so you can happen more than once every hundred years but people are dumb when it came to naming things)

Bridge design has too many variables. I like steel office buildings.

My graduate degree was geared towards practicality because everyone there was either already employed or going into research.

I find most of academia to be insane and really sympathize with you.

You teach now, yes? I hope you enjoy it. I've had so many friends who have left the teaching profession or realize they didn't want to do it and I just can't understand it.

I'm an oddity because I knew what I wanted, went to college, and really love what I do.

i do teach and i love it--just a summer and semester to go and I'm free of this grad school nonsense

That final semester was the best for me. I knew it was the end and basically spent the time finishing up my crazy classes (took two easy ones-construction management and pavement design and a third insane one on the geotechnical theory of earthquakes) and really just enjoyed life.
