Am I face blind?

(Anonymous) 2016-04-30 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Many things have made me wonder this recently. I don't seem to find anyone conventionally attractive, well, attractive. In fact most of them just look bland to me.

Like Michelle Phillips from the Mamas and the Papas:

Apparently she's universally considered scorching hot. I can't see it at all.

Can you recognize her though, if you see her on picture? If yes, you're not faceblind.

Okay yes, I can tell who people are. On the one hand - phew. On the other, I'm just really confused as to why I never find anyone attractive. Ever.

Do you never find anyone attractive at all? Or do you not find people attractive that other people tell you are attractive?

Of all the hundreds, probably thousands of people I've ever met or seen in media, I've only found four attractive. And those times were based on their smiles/personalities/intelligence.

Uh, that doesn't necessarily have anything to do with faceblindness. I had a VERY low rate of attraction, and my facial awareness is great--it's my artistic specialty. Being asexual and faceblind are totally different things.

Thanks for your input, LB.(It's great to see you all back on FS btw :) )

I don't think I am asexual personally. I have a libido it's just very tied in to emotions I guess? Hence my confusion. Still, it sounds as if I'm not face blind either.

That's also certainly possible! I know mine could work in a similar way.

People have different tastes?

Facenblindess, like many disorders, is a spectrum. You do know that?

Sure, but this sounds muuuch more like someone who is not necessarily into conventional beauty standards.

Yeah, OP is self-evidently completely shallow and objectively a horrible person, but I just needed to point out the flaw in your own argument too.

Face blindness isn't about attraction!

A better example would be--say you knew a guy who looked like kallanda_lee's icon, since I can see it. Then one day he shows up to meet you and some friends for lunch and he's shaved his head and his face. Now, you know it's still your friend, but your brain is going WHAT NO WHO IS THAT I DON'T KNOW THAT GUY

Likewise if you know a girl who always has pin-straight hair and dark clothes. She shows up one day with curls and a bright yellow jacket and you're brain refuses to process it as your friend.

That's not face blindness, that's different preferences.

Face blindness is not recognizing people by their faces.

That's not how faceblindness works.

Anyway, she's pretty in that plain way that people really liked in the 70s.

I don't know if it's face-blindness for you, anon, but for me it's just different and really specific tastes. I don't usually find conventionally attractive men hot; I find them carboard, samey and boring, and the features most of them share (big square jaw, certain shape of face, muscly) don't do it for me. I just have a preference for a different body type and different facial structures.
