I did this for my wedding and my bridesmaids looked great. The fact that they wore different styles hardly mattered and honestly, nobody I spoke to afterward even noticed. Choosing one color and letting them have their own pick was the point.

If it had been one color, it would be better. But it's the full blue-purple-burgundy-dark pink range. Too many options and clashing styles and ideas.

that sounds like a disaster as far as picking something out. Do you think she's really that laid back or does she have final say before you get the dress?

I had a friend's wedding where the girls were given a few shades of blue, told to keep it about knee length and everyone did their own thing but it looked really good.

She's very laid-back, and wanted us each to find something we're comfortable wearing. There are some plus-size girls in the party, and some body-image issues at play for one person.

We do seem to be defaulting to either blue or purple, but I wish there had been a few more directives. It's gonna be my A-line dress, a loose shift dress, a tight sheath dress, and a cheongsam-style dress (VERY heavy fabric for a hot summer wedding), plus one undecided so far. It's all over the place.

I understand the whole size issue and wanting everyone to be comfortable. At least there's not a lot of bridesmaids, but hey, as long as you're comfortable that's good!

Eh, okay. If she doesn't care about everyone being all matchy matchy, I'm not sure why anyone else would. I think it's admirable letting one's bridesmaids choose their own dress and it's a shame more brides aren't this reasonable.
