American toilets are the ones with the water that comes all the way up the bowl too, aren't they?

D:

Australian toilets are beautiful inventions and I will never take them for granted again.*

*except outdoor toilets and the drop ones at the national park. they need to die.

I first saw water-saving toilets when I moved into my first college dorm. They really do use fairly small amounts of water for pee only. I wish they were more common. They're so uncommon here that occasionally even when I do see them I'll forget to half-flush :(

I'm kind of surprised they're not more popular in other countries!

The US is woefully behind on many things.

The older toilets are super wasteful. A lot of the public toilet are also automatic flush so it's just one setting.

Outdoor toilets don't count. Port-a-pottys are so different.

Automatic flush isn't really a thing here. I encountered it in Europe though. I think if a toilet flushed on its own behind me while I was still mid-pee as a kid I probably wouldn't have ever wanted to use a toilet again.

Funny anecdote: My little cousin was deathly terrified of it, so my aunt used to put duct tape in front of the sensors when she would use those bathrooms so that my cousin could get on and off the toilet without it going off.

Oh man. Your aunt is smart. I wish I'd known to do that.

They used to take 8 hour car ride and having a terrified 4 year old who refused to use the bathrooms made for a difficult trip so they had to figure something out.

yeahhhh that happened to me as a kid. Maybe not mid-pee, but I hated not knowing when it was going to happen and it startled me. It contributed to my irrational fear of toilets (not making that up) for several years and I refused to use automatic ones.

I love them now (hands free!) but they scared me growing up.

We do have hands free flush in some newer toilets but you have to put your hand up in front of the sensor. I think I'll call it semi-automatic flush. I like those ones.

I think I would like that best of all. I wish we had those here.
