Get a diary with a lock and key, like they make for little kids! It's silly, but it sends a message ("if you see me, SO, don't open!") and might psychologically help?

Why don't you change the names when you write fic? Or keep it on your computer?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 10:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Have you ever considered telling your partner? I no longer hide my fanfiction hobby and have found people to be really supportive actually. I mean, I still get the weird looks, too, but nothing outright negative.

Same here. I mean, I don't go around parading my hobbies in people's faces, but if a relevant subject comes up, I have mentioned fanficcing before to people IRL. A few times, I've had people I know IRL find my online usernames and get on Google and come across my fic that way, without my mentioning it beforehand. I haven't come across anyone IRL who actually thought badly of fanfic writing as a hobby, or if they did they were polite enough to keep it to themselves. By and large the responses I get are either "Huh, okay." or "Well you seem to enjoy it, you do you."

And every once in a while, someone you know IRL turns out to be a fellow fanficcer in the same fandom as you, in the same communities as you, and you've actually read each other's fics/enjoyed their art. /true story

I feel you, OP, because I also write both fanfic and original, but nobody IRL knows about the fanfic. Unlike you, I don't write it longhand but this still runs the risk of someone discovering it on my hard drive if I suddenly croak. If I have something that I want to keep more on the down low, I store it only on Google Drive.

This is not fandom.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 10:45 pm (UTC)(link)
It's about writing fanfic and worrying about other people finding out that you write fanfic. It's about fandom. Either learn to read, or just go away with your "this isn't about faaaaaaaaandom" policing.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-03 10:56 pm (UTC)(link)
It is tho. It's not specific, but is about fanfic, which IS fandom.

fanfic is always about fandom, anon. good grief.

It IS about Fandom. Fanfic is Fandom.

Reading comprehension is a valuable skill. I advise you learn it soon.

Why complain about secrets that you obviously haven't read?

I recently started writing a couple short fan fics, and I feel kinda douchey about it, since I was all about "Awh yeah, I'm gonna focus on my original comics and it's gonna be great to do so!" (still am, somewhat), and I was hesitant to really say anything about it for the longest time. My friends probably think I'm a complete tool, lmao.

So yeah, I kinda get where you're coming from, OP.

Get a box that locks & keep your writings in there?

I may be biased since I'm not much one to keep secrets myself, but maybe you should tell your partner at least. That seems like kind of a big thing to hide from them, if it's that important to you?

I've literally written explicit noncon on paper at an airport (where I worked) - sometimes I did worry it might fall out and a traveler might find it. I never put my name on it, though.

Ow, ow, my eyes!

If the hard copy is for your first draft only, burn it after you have your second, digital copy.

I like to keep handwritten things for sentimental purposes (though I rarely hand-write stories these days; I find typing much easier), but if it's causing you more distress than not, burn the suckers!

I used to write fic on paper when I was in uni; I reduced the characters' names to their first letters and used abbreviations whenever I could to avoid someone taking a cursory glance at my notes to understand what was going on.
(To this day I still have quite a few textbook photocopies with fic drafts on the back and in the margins that I can't bring myself to just throw away aven thought I've typed and finished them long ago.)

it seems extremely strange to share a home and a life with someone* but also feel too embarrassed to talk with them about your own hobbies

*assuming this is a long term live-in relationship

Pusheen advises that maybe you should address why you don't feel about to tell your partner, and then you might feel better about the whole thing?
