It kind of changes, but at the moment what comes to mind is Jane Eyre, The Crying of Lot 49, 1984.

I also like true crime: In Cold Blood, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil and The People Who Eat Darkness have all stayed with me.

I just looked up "The People who Eat Darkness." I'll have to look for that - it sounds interesting. I know I'd heard of that girl before, probably because I was alive (though young) when she disappeared, but I had forgotten about it.

It's a really fascinating examination of hostess culture, the Japanese legal system, and the culture clash between Britain and Japan that this caused, as well as a sensitive, even handed picture of a grieving family, and a gripping account of a murder investigation. I would really recommend it.

I'm a big fan of true crime... The People Who Eat Darkness is on my reading list, thanks for reminding me of it.
