I really hate the fact that in order to have a mother/daughter tale where someone listened, you had to mute one of the party for about 40 minutes. I would have had Merida and Elinor get stuck in the wilderness somehow - maybe separated on some kind of trip from a hunting party by Mor'du, and so the remaining clans would go out to look for them while also avoiding a giant demon bear while the women learned about each other.
