It is a complete mistake to evaluate Trump on the level of policy. I honestly believe that's just not how he operates as a political creature.

The reason to vote for him is if you want to completely upset the whole mainstream of politics, particularly the parts of it that are concerned with ideas like political correctness and consensus politics and liberal norms and institutions. If you want a strong man in power, really.

Yes, but what does he intend to do if he is elected? What does he intend to do with that power exactly? What is his endgame? Change the system to what? Do what with his budget? Make America great again how?

Haven't you heard? He's going to carpet bomb ISIS and build a wall that Mexico will pay for. Like, literally, those aren't exagerated opinions on his plans. Those are his plans.

So there's nothing less... theatrical in the works for team Trump? That's really it?

That's really it.

Sure, I'll do your research for you. He also has a tax plan that raises the standard deduction and eliminates federal income tax for families making less than $50K a year and makes out current 7-tiered tax bracket system a four-tiered plan reduces the percent paid at each bracket and ends with a top tier around 25% for income above $425K (which isn't to say your entire $425K is taxed at 25%, just what you make over that).

This is not sustainable.

Ugh. Bad typing. Let's try again.

He also has a tax plan that raises the standard deduction and eliminates federal income tax for families making less than $50K a year and turns our current 7-tiered tax bracket system into a four-tiered plan that reduces the percent paid at each bracket and ends with a top tier around 25% for income above $425K (which isn't to say your entire $425K is taxed at 25%, just what you make over that).

Still not sustainable.

The thing with a plan like that is that I simply cannot believe that Donald Trump attaches any importance or significance to it whatsoever.

I think the reason to vote for Trump is that you appreciate his character enough not to care about specific answers to those questions, and to trust that his answers will work out.

There are some values that he has expressed that can help fill in expectations - opposition to immigration, more interest in protectionism, and a more expansive foreign policy. and he might have some policy specifics on his website but I don't think those are worth paying attention to - policy is actively opposed to the point of Donald Trump. He is, as a candidate, basically anti-policy.

A voting attitude that would make sense if he was being elected grand dictator of the world, but he wants to be elected president of a democracy with an existing and stable democratic system. He essentially can't do any of the things he's talking about without majority approval, and especially approval from his own party, and nobody else seems to be on board with him.

His campaign seems to be running completely on gullibility.

Well, certainly, I don't think myself that it's a good approach to liberal democratic politics (in the small-l, political theory sense of liberal). I think that's what the whole question of the election is - whether it is either a good approach to liberal democratic politics, or a superior alternative to liberal democratic politics.

I do think, at the end of the day, a lot of American voters do actually want to vote for basically Alec Baldwin from Glengarry Glen Ross. Or an insane college football coach or something.

Exactly. Nothing about his campaign makes any sense, if he intends to take this position for real.

I was just listening to his victory speech. He wants to keep the mines open, get everybody jobs, make us all love each other, and make us proud of our country. I mean...it doesn't sound bad. I think he's evolving as a political creature.
