I love that period of history, so i'll check this out. How old it is?

It was published in 1954, but the writing isn't dated at all. I mean, the style is a little different from the standard modern storytelling style, but it fits the period really well. It's actually the first of what is technically a series of novels which follows the same family line over the course of several centuries of British history, but most of the books in the series aren't related to one another except that the family heirloom ring makes an appearance so you know it's about the same genetic line.
