why is the art so bad though?

Freefall has changed character designs a bit over the years, but apart from switching to color, the overall art style has been the same since 1998. I guess the artist considers this sufficient for what he wants to do.

I stuck with the black and white versions - I don't like the colour at all, and I'm glad the B&W edition is maintained.

Leaving the artwork aside - it's pretty basic, but honestly, it's a style and I've seen worse - the story being told is surprisingly interesting and neat hard SF, particularly once it really gets going.

And as noted elsewhere, Dr. Bowman is great.
