That's why I'm hesitant about beta readers because I want to know they (a) will actually read and respond to my work and (2) I'm used to getting concrit and questions because that's what I do in school already and (c) I just plumb don't know where to find a reliable beta.

if what you're writing is non-fanfiction, then taking a writing class at a community college or seeing if our local library has a writer's group might be an option.
