I don't know how people know left and right without double checking. I still sing the song I learned in preschool: "L is for my left hand and the other is my right".

I never learned the make an L trick as a kid. I just have this funny group of freckles on my left hand that I look at.

It's not just you. I am mostly deaf in my right ear, and I still have to stand there and think about it for a few seconds before I can pick a seat in a group setting so I can hear everyone.

Just tell them you're calculating the direction and quality of the sound so you can find the best spot. Make it sound complicated and nobody will question you. :P
