just look at the ingredients on the back and try to get one that has actual meat as the first two or three ingredients. it's best to go to grain-free brands but they tend to be pretty expensive, so looking for brands they don't have corn, rice, etc in the first few ingredients and have actual meat listed instead is a good rule of thumb

If your cat's doing well (healthy according to a vet) and not having issues with vomiting or diarrhea or allergies, there's no need to change its food because someone on the internet said so.

This is bad advice.

You could feed your kid just candy and garbage without any fruits or vegetables or proteins, and the kid might be "healthy" but that doesn't mean the diet is.

And while certainly not trusting random internet anons about diet/health issues is perfectly reasonable, all OP has to do is research for about two minutes on Google and learn what kinds of diets cats need and why many/most mainstream brands are the literal equivalent of feeding your cat nothing but junk food.

Candy and garbage will not make the kid healthy or "healthy" (the quotes are unnecessary, because they don't make your statement "true"). Because candy has no nutritional value, for the most part. The cat food does, and if it's sufficient for the cat's health, again, as determined by a veterinarian, then there is no reason to change the cat's diet.

Also, not everything you read on the internet is true. You should put in more than 2 minutes on Google before you make any major decisions, in any area of life.

No shit, and not everything marketers tell you is true either. This isn't a matter of opinion: cats being carnivores is a fact, and these big name brands being full of shit cats don't get nutrients from is a fact, too. It isn't something that's up for debate. OP is welcome to research as much as they like from as many reputable sources as they like.

Meow Mix and similar cat foods do NOT meet a cat's nutritional needs. A cat can be "healthy" in spite of a very bad diet, that doesn't make the diet okay. As I said with feeding kids only garbage, or with smoking. you can be healthy in spite of it but it still is NOT good.

Try googling 3 minutes. It's not enough to copy and paste a factoid you found on a blog, you need to understand why a thing is the way it is. Cats are obligate carnivores because they require compounds from meat that they cannot synthesize on their own. Like taurine. Cats need taurine to live, okay? Okay.

And you know what?

Every single meat-based grain-free food has taurine as an added ingredient, just like every other lowly plebeian cat food you can think of to snub your nose at. Every single one I googled (I spent like 4 minutes, you'd be proud):

lmao okay so they stick in taurine and suddenly that makes all the useless grains which do nothing but give cats diabetes and have the nutritional benefits of sawdust - which are, by the way, the most of what's in these brands - and very little actual meat content okay. whoo taurine, it's fine now, it has taurine!

well the candy I exclusively feed my 6-year-old has added vitamin C WE'RE GOOD GUYS DON'T WORRY

What is going on here? Are you really arguing that Meow Mix the best thing to feed a cat? Even inside a brand some of their products will be better than others. Like the Purina Indoor Advantage is better than the Purina Indoor Delights. (Guess which one costs more though -_-;)

I don't think MeowMix!anon needs to be shamed for their pet food choices, but the alternative is not to argue that Meow Mix is just as good as every other line of cat food. There are better ones. And there are probably worse ones.
