I thought the character is a joke because people (who don't actually read the comics or have watched the DCAU) think all he can do is uselessly talk to dolphins, not because of how he emotes. Momoa already has him looking like he'll rip out your spine and feed it to the dolphins he talks to. He's basically the only reason I'll see this movie, because I hate all the live-action films DC has done, but this take on Aquaman is at least refreshing.
