It's normal. I don't ever want a dog, or a bird. But I see cute videos of people with their pets and I go "Aww, I want a dog!" It's normal. You see someone getting enjoyment out of something and your gut reaction is that you want it too. It's how our ancient more chimplike ancestors figured out good stuff vs. bad stuff.

But, you know, our reasoning has evolved beyond that. I can see someone enjoying ice cream and want it, even if I know I don't want to spend the next 8 hours in lactose-induced hell and I don't actually get any ice cream.

I mean it's worth it, if the feeling persists, maybe to start looking at your reasons that went along with not wanting kids and seeing if they're changeable ones. Like if I was serious about getting a dog and I got a tiny apartment because I don't need space for a dog because at the time I didn't like dogs I could look into getting a bigger dog-friendly space. And either the warm infatuation glow of cute doggy videos will fade under the cold withering light of actually moving, or... you know, it's a new life goal.

Seconding this. I have really adorable nephews and nieces and every time I hang out with them I come away like, "Kids are so fun and interesting and it's so amazing get to watch them grow up, I want my own someday!"

But then I see how tired my siblings look and how tight their budgets are and how responsible they have to be 24/7 and just all the things they have to worry about and I'm like, "Nevermind, I'll stick to the aunt experience."
