Heads up: tomorrow's secret post will be late (8 PM eastern), as we've been asked by multiple people to delay it until the activity strike is over.

Sorry but I haven't heard anything about a strike. What's it about this time?

Forgot!

[identity profile] mccarthief.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
68: I still don't see the appeal in that series.
78: Totally agree.

Something about censored interests that weren't really censored and they're not censored at all now and no one being able to sign up for free accounts anymore or something.

In short, I'm not participating and it's probably obvious. ;)

Re: Ummmm?

[identity profile] athenaltena.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 10:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I was under the impression it had something to do with free accounts not being free anymore... or something. I don't care, so haven't been paying attention. :/

Re: Ummmm?

[identity profile] shinga.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's something like that. Like anyone who had a free account before a specific date can keep it but the ones who sign up for one after that have to have a plus account with ads and stuff.

Re: Ummmm?

[identity profile] athenaltena.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh. That's not that bad, then. I had a plus for a while before someone got me a paid one and the ads aren't even that obnoxious. The person who was railing about it that I saw made it sound like you couldn't have free accounts at all and you'd have to pay for all of them. In that case *ptfft* I care even less.

Really?

[identity profile] mccarthief.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
So basically it's over a bunch of misunderstandings?

I don't think I'll be participating either in that case.

Re: Really?

[identity profile] shinga.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It's a bunch of "how dare LJ run their business like they own it!" which they... do...

Not that the new owners of LJ are being 100% mature about it either, but honestly the strike is dumb. It will accomplish NOTHING. Absolutely nothing. But eh, I guess if it makes people feel better.

Re: Really?

[identity profile] athenaltena.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
The part that bugged me was the people saying "IT'S BECAUSE THEY'RE RUSSIANS!" *rolls eyes* But yeah, immaturity on both parts, but at least the LJ owners have their business at stake (they have to pay the bills somehow) while the other people are basically just making a fuss over small change.

[identity profile] socksy-back.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 01:14 am (UTC)(link)
It's more like, "how dare LJ run a business like it doesn't need to keep customers happy and informed and willing to shell out money and provide content so they can continue to make a fuckload of cash."

But go on, you were being amazingly cool and apathetic there.

[identity profile] shinga.livejournal.com 2008-03-21 12:10 pm (UTC)(link)
But I am apathetic. The strike won't do anything but give them less work for a day, which to me helps them. And the whole "omg they're censoring interests" thing stopped anyway, the interests are back up, so obviously they do some things to keep the entitled happy. I mean, for God's sake, it's a couple of interests. And the whole 'we're putting ads up' thing? How bad is it, really, that you might have to just use an ad-blocker? They're ads. LJ has a business to run, they need money to do it. It's still free, the most you have to do is see some ads in a few places. It isn't the end of the world, and a "protest" that does nothing is pointless.

Re: Ummmm?

The LJ strike runs from midnight GMT (ie, a bit over 1.5 hours from now) today to mignight GMT tomorrow (25.5 hours).

It is protesting the changes to accounts (the deletion of basic accounts as an option for new users, thereby forcing users to have to pay money not to have ads) and the removal of certain interests such as bisexuality, fanfiction and faeries from "most popular interests" list, despite those interests still very much being most popular in numbers.

Strikers are promising an LJ blackout. No posts, no comments, etc.

Re: Ummmm?

[identity profile] fencer-x.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not quite as simple as that...

The strike is basically to show SUP what LJ would be like (for 24 hours) if people left for good, in the hopes it'll clue them into not ignoring the better part of their userbase. Lack of content that paid users pay to see = no more paid users, and Man Cannot Live On Ads Alone. It's not designed to hurt, it's designed to educate. How effective it'll be remains to be seen. I figure 24 hours of my time that could be better spent doing Real World work isn't a big deal.

The disappearing interests thing is explained here (http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_lounge/683776.html). The fact that they're back doesn't negate the fact that they were gone for any amount of time--and that only particular ones were "censored" (or filtered, or lost, or whatever) is disturbing at least :/

Anyways, it's not a bunch of people whining about having to pay or see ads, as some people seem to think it is. I just don't like the way LJ's going management-wise (seeing as the head of SUP in an interview basically went, "O U CRAAAAZY LJERS LOL"--not quite who you want running a blogging service you pay).

But...

[identity profile] mccarthief.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Several sites now run on the whole 'if you don't want the ads then you have to pay' basis, why is it such a horror that lj are doing the same now (unless it completly fucks up your journal's look)? I switched from basic to the plus and the ads haven't affected me in the least

Intrest thing...so they removed a couple of 'particular' ones. Have journals and communities been unexplainably removed?

Sorry but all I can see right now is paranoia because of Strikeout.

Re: But...

[identity profile] athenaltena.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Sorry but all I can see right now is paranoia because of Strikeout.

That seems to be the gist of it. LJ can't seem to do anything these days without people getting upset, but I'm more inclined to sit back and wait rather than get upset every time they do something minor rather than yell "FIRE!" every single time. (In short, this is about the 6th time recently that people have started getting upset over something, and it's getting old).

Re: But...

[identity profile] fencer-x.livejournal.com 2008-03-20 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I've not seen any paranoia, but then I have friends who don't jump at the slightest infringement *shrugs* Most of the people I know who are joining in on the strike are pissed at LJ because they're treating their userbase like 2 year olds. They tried to slide the basic-account discontinuation under everyone's noses and treated it like it wasn't a big deal.

I believe it's their business and they're perfectly entitled to run it as they like, but as the basic account was a big attractant for many users, getting rid of it and not even telling people (rather: trying to hide it and pass it off as, "Oooohhh LOL you people USE those???") is really rubbing a lot of people the wrong way.

That's why I'm participating at least.

Re: the interests being removed, THAT's paranoia there, I'll give you. It's been explained away as a faulty filter, but it's just really weird that they'd go away. IMHO if they really were trying to filter them away from the public eye (since that Popular Interests list is available to anyone) then they wouldn't have reinstated it so quickly when people brought it up. It could have just been a random error that popped up at a really bad time.

TL;DR - No paranoia, no one thinks their LJs are getting deleted. People just want to be treated with respect by a company they're still loyal to and want to REMAIN loyal to.

I'm not up in arms, but I am starting to get ticked off at the way LJ's treating their userbase. So that's why I'm participating.

Re: Ummmm?

(Anonymous) 2008-03-20 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
The strike is about SUP/LJ making changes and not telling us about it. The feeling is if people don't protest *now*, more and worst changes will happen in the future (Permanent accounts will probably be targeted eventually since SUP isn't making any money off of those account holders).
