I feel that way about the South Park ones too.

I don't see the attraction either. Honestly, one of the things I loved about Professor Layton and the Curious Village was the lack of huge souless eyes and sparkles (Flora is somewhat not withstanding). It seemed like a nice mixture between something out of Doraemon and cartoons and I loved how it was reflected in the animation itself.

Seeing Layton with eyes is just... strange. I did a double-take when I first saw that fanart; thought it was some anime character cosplaying as Layton. :( Actually, I do that every time something that isn't in the anime style is drawn that way, my mind kicks itself into believing that it's some unknown anime character dressed up as that character.

I personally describe the animation in the Layton series as "French-looking."

Which probably makes things very odd for fanartists and potential fanartists.

My initial thought at "French-looking" was "I wonder what British Gentleman Layton would say to that". *palmface*

I admit myself that the only things that come to mind at French Animation are Oban Star Racers and Totally Spies, the latter not of voluntary choosing. I like the term though; sounds better than 'The Unknown Child of Doraemon and Cartoons' or 'Anime But Not Anime' as I've seen some people call it.
