But then again, I would think Chinese is really hard because of the incredible amount of symbols you have to learn and how the fluctuation of your voice changes the meaning of the words, but I was told by a man who speaks fluent Chinese (not a native speaker), but says Japanese is the hardest language. I think Japanese is muuuuucccchhhh easier than Chinese. I have a friend who picked up French like a daily newspaper, but can't remember simple Spanish words.
Basically, I don't disagree with your words, but I think it probably just depends on the person. Some languages are easier for some people.
(And colonialism is a big part of it being a common business language. That and because for a while America was by far the most powerful country business-wise or something.)
