42. Um. Secret. Yeah. That's not the point. The point is that I need to know where you got this picture. NOW.
59. I don't know this artist, but personally, I like that kind of unusual cropping. Not for all of my icons, of course, but it's interesting and you've got to admit that it's different than most of the icons that are out there.

Well, I would first off argue that these kinds of extreme close-up icons do have at least a focal point, be it an eye, or a lock of hair, or what have you. Next, taking into consideration what you said about icons being really too small a medium to really apply these kinds of principles of design, as well as considering the fact that these rules are often broken in other forms of art as well, I don't think you can simply write off these kind of icons because they don't follow rules of composition.
However, I do have one thing to add. I re-read your secret, and I do think that if these are the only kinds of icons she/he makes, then they do deserve a little more of the criticism. You need to have a basic knowledge of composition before you start to experiment like that.

Last time I stuck my neck out here I phrased something poorly and dealt with the consequence orz.If I were a devil's advocate, I'd challenge you to find a well-placed focal point, but m'not; that's a good point. :3 And that's also true -- I'm not trying to say they should be written off, since they are good quality and some people do like them. I think I'm just trying to say people are welcome to dislike them based on more than just subjective opinion? :3
They're not the only ones by the maker~ I'll use a different one of hers now. :3 There's a pretty decent crop, yes? Good negative space~
