Slightly OT...

... but I really hate the 'it is not my job to educate you'-argument.

I mean, of course you do not owe anyone explanations every minute of your day, but in general? Yes, yes it is your job. I am sorry, it is unfair, I know. I am not black, but I am a woman and I am gay and if I want people to understand the problems that come along with that, I need to explain it to them. As a group (be it black people, women, etc) it is our job to make sure that we are heard and understood. Which means, we are kinda required to educate people.

(Of course all of that is generally speaking, there are always situations, where you as a person are not willing to discuss something and provide information, and that's ok. But srsly, if you want to run a tumblr that features discussions of race, just have a fucking link to a racism 101 ready and you will easily be able to deal with every annoying ask, without sounding like an asshole.)

Agreed, someone has to do it, and what's better than someone from the actual group.
Even if you tell somebody to go dig up info for themselves, that info has to come from somewhere. It's ok to ask questions.

I think the main place I see that is in response to people who insist they need one on one explanations of info that is easily available. Because a lot of times (in my experience as a non white lesbian) people online often aren't asking for info cause they are actually curious, they are trying to be aggressive. People who ask me (for example) how lesbian sex even works and how is it really sex without a dick are very rarely seriously confused about that - they just want to harass me. And with some things it really is like - google exists.

Enh, I'm kinda with you... but for me.

Like, I've taken on multi education. That is my thing I do, and I've found ways to deal with the tedious questions, or recognize when I'm being trolled and it's not worth my time. Sure, sometimes I have days where I have to unplug my computer or walk away and take a break, I'm a fallible squishy human, but in general, I'm okay with doing this work.

HOWEVER. I've found that certain things, I just CAN NOT do education on. Like rape stuff. Oh my god, can I not keep my cool with rape stuff. I can handle ALLLLL the stupid, "I thought that didn't exist," and "so like Sibyl" stuff, but man, just ONE, "But what if that five-year-old is really asking for it?" and I go off like a Roman candle.

So I feel like it's kinda a question over whether you CAN explain it well, and without getting really honked off. (Also, kids. Man, I really feel the hurt when a young child ends up being interrogated on things like their gender or sexuality by adults who are taking advantage of them. *shudder*)

People why say that aren't really out to educate people in the first place. They just want to complain about how horrible a person you are and that you should go die in a fire.

Well, there's a time and a place for 101 and a time in a place to say, "go to a library." If you don't meet the prereqs for the MA or MFA course it's not the job of your professor or peers to explain what an F-stop is, and how it relates to ISO and shutter speed, and oh gosh, how in the world are you going to present 50 photographs on Friday when you're figuring out the difference between focus and focal length on Monday? There's a perfectly good foundations course down the hall for that sort of thing.

And the fucking links to the fucking 101 are usually in the sidebar, not that anyone ever reads that before putting in their opinions on a topic. In addition to the links in the sidebar, there's Google. Google has tabs so that you can search news, books, and peer-reviewed scholarship in addition to web pages, any of which is likely to be a better education than what you'd get from an anonymous ask box or derailing a conversation in progress. (One reason why tumblr is shit as a platform is that it gives an open mic to randos.)

Not to mention a fairly large portion of questions are not really honest questions, they're rhetorical hedges around trolling or attempts at a "gotcha."

And honestly, "educate me" is why open forums on the internet usually fail in just about any subject area.

I agree with this in general though I think there are specific situations where "it's not my job to educate you" does apply.

Additionally, I'm a very extroverted person who loves talking and loves debate and I think it takes a lot more to get me to be exhausted of a repetitive conversation than it does some other internet denizens, so it's definitely reasonable to say "please do some research because I do not have the energy to has this out again" - no individual person is obligated to educate another in any particular circumstance.

I do however agree that it's wise to take up the responsibility of educating others about discrimination if we ever want it to stop, and it's also something I don't really mind doing (as well as learning, myself, because there are things I don't know/aren't really aware of/could stand to learn more about).

Like all things though, there is a time and a place. If someone is constantly derailing complex or topical discussions to ask Racism 101 questions, then IMO there is absolutely nothing wrong with pointing out to that person that Google exists. It's not anyone's job to drop everything they're doing to answer questions from people who obviously haven't even tried, and it's extremely entitled to expect a perfect stranger to be at your beck and call every time something like "why don't y'all like being called negro? It's just spanish for black" pops into your head.
