"It kind of annoys me that so many people insist that Nuriko was a woman end of story. Sure, they identified as female for a large part of the story, but everyone seems to be forgetting that they publicly came out as male-identifying at a certain part of the series. I don't know if you can really pin Nuriko down as a specific gender (though the last they identified as was male), but I'm pretty sure that coming out publicly as male-identifying is not something that 100% female people tend to do."

Also I'm pretty sure that the characters spend most of the time talking about Nuriko with gender-neutral pronouns (in Japanese; the subs I had aeons ago used female pronouns for most of the story, then switched when Nuriko cut his hair and was male-identifying again).
