Mirabile, by Janet Kagan - http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1141442.Mirabile

A bunch of colonists dealing with interfacing their own biology with the new planet, meanwhile a lot of their plants and animals have the codes for different things hidden in their junk genes, so for example a petunia could under certain conditions sprout a pansy seed could sprout a firefly. This was meant to be like a backup library, but they lost their index, and the viewpoint character is the 'jason' in charge of wrangling the weird and wonderful things that turn up.

Mirabile is a really good one.

Annihilation, by Jeff Vandermeer, is a recent science fiction novel. The biologist is the main character. She is in a weird, scary place. It is the first book of a trilogy. Horror elements.

Tuf Voyaging by George R R Martin, from way before Game of Thrones.

Dreamsnake by Vonda MacIntyre.

Xenogenesis trilogy by Octavia Butler might fit, and it is really interesting.
