I lived in a town w/ only 300 people up until 5 years ago. everyone knowing everyone was a very literal thing. the next town over was 40 minutes away and when you share the same lone post office, the same lone "grocery store", etc. you eventually see everyone. it's also notoriously hard to escape small rural towns so people tend to be there for a long time.
