Re: Getting rid of this character ruined the show
(Anonymous) 2016-05-13 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)Second - and regardless of whether you agree with that - I really strong believe that the ninth season was shitty for reasons completely unrelated to JD. That season would have been terrible if JD had been in every episode. It was fundamentally, bone-deep terrible. It had no reason to exist, it was fucked from the inception.
Re: Getting rid of this character ruined the show
But the problem with making it about Carla is her character only really works as a nurse. Not to discriminate against nurses, but making the main character one means you'd lose a lot of the purview you get with having a main character as a physician. Now... having the show be about season 1 Elliot instead of JD? Sold. I really wish they hadn't destroyed her like they did.
I don't think S9 was doomed from inception, but it was a victim of formula, certainly. They tried too hard to stick a bunch of newer and quirkier characters into the formula of S1, which only really worked because the S1 characters weren't actually that quirky. They read and felt like normal medical residents who were terrified and had no clue what they were doing. The realism was what kept the show afloat in the beginning and they just completely lost it by S9.

It doesn't seem like anyone involved had a story they really wanted to tell, or any answer to the question "Why are we making this TV show". You can change the characters as much as you want, that would still be a problem.
