First episode of season 7, he died and was replaced by the Leviathans. He cam back at the end of the season. But the beginning of season 7 was what lost the show for me (that and season 6).

Season 6 was a result of some sort of strange restructuring, I heard. The "Sam doesn't have soul oh no! :(" storyline was vastly unpopular. They had designed it so getting his soul back would be the main goal of the season and the season finale, but they had to scrap it and quickly find a new villain due to its unpopularity.

Also, if they hadn't gotten renewed for season 6, Cas would have been God! Which would have been weird.
