I live in a semi-small town, and while certainly not everyone knows everyone... people tend to know families, and family names? Someone will ask you your last name, and then most likely know that last name and try to connect it to you ("The neighboring farm was a Johnson, is that you?" "oh yeah that's my aunt and uncle" kind of deal). You're basically "connected" to everyone indirectly, and you can generally find that connection within about five minutes of talking.
