I expect they are emulating the previously pretentious culture of the "cool smoker". They'll grow out of it eventually.

You're probably right. I just have a short fuse for a man in his thirties making a huge deal of his vaping in the middle of class, and he's not the only guy of that type I've known. Not that everyone is like that at all, it's just a "culture," one avoided in part by cig smokers because smoking cigarettes was entirely ubiquitous for so long.
