Surgical masks work wonders for avoiding catching respiratory infections from random passers by.

Your friend's probably more at risk for you giving her a cold during the presymptomatic period than for getting one from someone on the street.

I really wish people here would use those the way they do in Asia. I spent some time in Japan and it was pretty much expected of you to wear one if you were sick to avoid exposing others - they even had ones that were designed to look cute and fashionable.
