I wouldn't really say cheating is a trope that is particular to slash fandom? I think there are enough het fics that deal with it, as well.

Also, if anything, slash fandom is way more fond of the trope of "decided they worked better as friends" to get rid of canon female love intrests.

Yeah, cheating's always been an across the board thing in my experience as well.

Sadly, it's also my experience that I've seen a lot of canon female love interests turned into shrill, controlling bitches as a means of writing them off (and like cheating, that's something I've seen in both slash AND het fics) :/. I very much appreciate it when stories do the kind of trope you mention as a means of breaking up a canon pairing. It spares the story a lot of potentially unnecessary drama and character bashing, which makes reading it more enjoyable for me.

nayrt

I mean...in this case it sounds like OP isn't bashing the female character at all. It sounds like wanting Hughes to actually be a good father and husband is way better than the "he secretly doesn't love his wife, and wishes he never had a family" type crap I've seen before. His wife and daughter are a huge part of his life and it's a little hard to naturally segue things because of that, even if Hughes and Roy do have an incredibly close bond that lends itself well to slashing.

Oh, yeah, no, I didn't mean to imply my thoughts about hating the canon love interest were related to the secret, sorry. I was just speaking in a general sense :p. Should've clarified.

I'm not familiar with this particular series at all, but I can very much sympathize with the secret-maker's struggle all the same, 'cause I've got a similar issue going on with a couple non-canon pairings I like, too. It is indeed rather tough.

I kinda wonder if it's used a bit more in slash because canon pairings tend to be het, and often one or both members of a juggernaut slash pairing are canonically taken and not with each other for that reason. But I don't think people are inherently more likely to write cheating in clash stories - it's just because of the logistics.

Yeah, if it is more common in slash, I imagine that would be the reason.

But actually I still don't think it is that common. Idk in most fics I've read the female love intrest is either never mentioned or they had and amicable break-up or (as the anon above pointed out) she is turned in to a crazy/evil version of herself. I think the cheating storyline is comparably rare, bc most people do not want to see the characters they love as the bad guys.

+1

I think [personal profile] firstmoonie is particularly sensitive to the trope and so sees it as more prevalent than it really is. I've been in a lot of fandoms, and I'd say cheating fics have been super uncommon in all of them.

See, in a way I'm personally more forgiving of cheating in slash fic because there are a lot of canons where being in a homosexual relationship might not be something that is considered acceptable in that society, so I could buy the characters getting married because it was something that was expected of them rather than something that they actually wanted.

Though with these characters, Hughes is madly in love with his wife, I don't think you could change that w/o changing his character.

I can see interpreting it as OP does, where he has great familial and even romantic love for his spouse but isn't sexually attracted to women, though it's not my reading of them.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-17 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not familiar with the canon, but I don't see why you couldn't interpret it as him loving this other guy and getting married because of societal obligations, but also growing to truly love his wife as well. I mean, there is no law that says that someone is only allowed to love one person at a time. I think a situation like that could make for a really interesting fic even not knowing the canon.

I'm skeptical of that interpretation w/ these characters but in abstract it's a neat idea.

[personal profile] firstmoonie 2016-05-17 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Except some of the blatantly canon het couples are not like that, OP's example is being a big one.

That's true but in my experience with Naruto in Ao3, there is a huge wave of cheating fics for Naruto/Sasuke more than say, Naruto/Sakura and it annoys me whenever I search for fics. It doesn't help that Naruto/Hinata is one of my other OTPs and I have to go through those messy fics in their tag too.
