Also, if anything, slash fandom is way more fond of the trope of "decided they worked better as friends" to get rid of canon female love intrests.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)Sadly, it's also my experience that I've seen a lot of canon female love interests turned into shrill, controlling bitches as a means of writing them off (and like cheating, that's something I've seen in both slash AND het fics) :/. I very much appreciate it when stories do the kind of trope you mention as a means of breaking up a canon pairing. It spares the story a lot of potentially unnecessary drama and character bashing, which makes reading it more enjoyable for me.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)I mean...in this case it sounds like OP isn't bashing the female character at all. It sounds like wanting Hughes to actually be a good father and husband is way better than the "he secretly doesn't love his wife, and wishes he never had a family" type crap I've seen before. His wife and daughter are a huge part of his life and it's a little hard to naturally segue things because of that, even if Hughes and Roy do have an incredibly close bond that lends itself well to slashing.

(Anonymous) 2016-05-16 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)I'm not familiar with this particular series at all, but I can very much sympathize with the secret-maker's struggle all the same, 'cause I've got a similar issue going on with a couple non-canon pairings I like, too. It is indeed rather tough.

But actually I still don't think it is that common. Idk in most fics I've read the female love intrest is either never mentioned or they had and amicable break-up or (as the anon above pointed out) she is turned in to a crazy/evil version of herself. I think the cheating storyline is comparably rare, bc most people do not want to see the characters they love as the bad guys.

I can see interpreting it as OP does, where he has great familial and even romantic love for his spouse but isn't sexually attracted to women, though it's not my reading of them.
