I see all these secrets shipping older men and younger women, and secrets about how someone feels so "weird" because they always like older men, and sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who DOESN'T like them (in that context, I mean, I don't hate older men in general). But just can't get rid of the feeling that they'd be like my dad. Overbearing and constantly lecturing and ranting about politics and why modern life sucks and modern people suck and blah blah blah.

Heh. I am definitely not attracted to older men and I have a great relationship with my dad. Maybe part of it is that the idea of having a romantic relationship that even begins to resemble my relationship with my dad is a major squick, though I haven't really thought about it that way before...I just think about older guys in that context and go "DNW".

I'm with you, anon. I don't like guys more than a few years older than me (for the same reasons you mentioned) and my ships reflect that, but in some fandom circles, it feels like everyone's really into age gaps.

I'm definitely not interested in older men or women irl, and not in ships either. It feels really skeevy to me. I'd much prefer someone close to my own age.

I prefer men my own age. I do get a little tired of people saying they feel "weird" about liking older men when so many other people are saying the same thing all the time, but how they feel is their business.

What I find funny is how I hear people talking about preferring older or younger people, or see lists of the pros and cons of dating someone older or someone younger, and it seems like being with someone your own age is not even considered an option? I mean, I suppose it's assumed that similar-age is supposed to be baseline normal and so their gonna talk about the alternatives, but I don't quite get that vibe. I dunno. It sometimes makes *me* feel weird for preferring guys my own age.

I've yet to see a ~20 year old who could dress himself, let alone potentially provide me with all the maturity and grace of an older man.

You like what you like, and there is nothing wrong with that. My type physically tends to be older than me. I generally don't like young-looking guys. But I'm also not at all attracted to people anything like my dad. Massive turn-off. Like, Giles on Buffy reminds me a lot of my dad, so he's firmly in the parent section of my brain and I can't be attracted to him at all.

People feel weird about it because every single time the older men/younger women dynamic is mentioned, plenty of people pop out of the woodwork with comments like "eeeeeeeeewww" and "it'd be like dating my daaaaaaad!" and protests that it's an unhealthy power imbalance. You're not the minority, you're the majority.
