Re: What should be illegal but isn't?

Any kind of permanent body modification that is not medically needed against people and animals that cannot consent.

Circumcision is a terrible practice that I can't believe is so widely accepted.

Declawing, cropping ears, and docking tails of animals are also awful.

That could potentially lead to trouble with food animals, or hunting.

How so?

Well, they can't consent to slaughter.

How can you possibly conflate "slaughter" and "body modification"?

Agreed so hard with all of these.

I am also against these things.

Happily, ear and tail docking are now banned where I live, and vets caught doing it can lose their license to practice.

That is awesome! I wish it would happen here. :(

I like to think the work of my undergraduate supervisor had a lot to do with it (he was an animal behaviourist), and probably if his work with dogs hadn't gotten so much local attention the laws here would be much less likely to have changed.

All of these.

Declawing is thankfully illegal where I live but I'm not sure the others are.

Declawing is probably the worst out of the animal ones.

It's awful and I don't understand how anyone can willfully mutilate their pet like that.

Ear docking is horrid too and I can only get behind tail docking if it's for medical reasons(like a tail being too broken to repair).

I think a lot of people don't realize how horrible declawing is, because the word itself sounds so innocuous. It should really be referred to as amputation.

Yup. You are literally cutting off parts of their feet.

I told my friend I was 100% against declawing and she was shocked, saying it's no problem bc her own cat was declawed and didn't suffer for it. I told her to research it more and she was like, "I did and it's fine."

this isn't even the first time I've gotten a reaction like that but it's so frustrating how ignorant people are on the subject.

The word doesn't even sound innocuous to me, like I've always imagined a cats claws being literally ripped from their paws whenever I heard it so it boggles me that people think it's harmless.

Man, I was a bit disappointed at first that apparently I was the only one who mentioned circumcision. (I read the rest of the comments in a weird order)

also, yeah. your comment is good.

I mostly agree with you? Though I think that sheep, at least, should be exempt from the tail-docking clause. (Depending on the breed, feces can get caught in the wool of the tali, which can lead to Other Gross Things.)

I read somewhere that some breeds of dogs need to get their tails docked, so their at a lower risk for breaking their tails? Which sounds like some Grade-A bullshit tbh, but now I kind of want to go and as a vet about it, because that just sounds like such a weird? I guess? Justification for it.

No, some dogs definitely need their tails docked. They can get something called happy tail. Basically they wag so hard, they continuously break their tail bones or open wounds on them. Knew a dog that had it. When they really got going, the room would look like someone had been murdered because of all the blood splatter.

Poor dog! D: I stand corrected; that doesn't sound stupid, that's a reason that makes sense. I thought that that was just something someone had said to justify it.

(But fuck ear-cropping still tho)

Sounds like you could slide that into the "medically needed" category though.

Declawing, cropping ears, and docking tails of animals are also awful.(/i)

YES! YES! and may I say it again YES!

I used to think Declawing wasn't so bad, then I read up on it. I was horribly wrong and will NEVER declaw a cat again.

Cropping and docking are also really stupid practices (unless it's for medical reasons, as mentioned before) because what's the point? To make the dog look "mean?" They look just fine with their tails and ears in tact, thank you.
