Yeah, it's been shown that people who abuse animals are also violent towards other people in general, so it really is strange that animal abuse isn't taken more seriously for that reason alone.

But I fully agree with you that animal abuse on its own is horrific and should be just as worthy of severe punishment. People who enjoy hurting and killing animals for the hell of it are creeps, plain and simple.
