I used to complain all the time about not having health insurance: what if I broke my leg, or got a chronic infection, or got diagnosed with cancer? I said and still believe that the US should have single payer health care. Now I have a good health plan through my employer... and I barely use it. I've gotten a couple of shots. I haven't had a physical, or the pap smear my HMO keeps bugging me about. I'm too terrified of what might be wrong with me. I mean, I know I have anxiety issues, but honestly, getting help for my mental issues frightens me less; I have some idea of what those are. I feel guilty for not going to the doctor when so many people desperately need the health coverage I have.

The longer you don't go, the longer you're (potentially) letting something bad happen inside your body. They key is to check things early and often to prevent them from becoming insurmountable later. Health wise, you should always nip things in the bud! And you'll be so glad you did, especially if/when you come back with a clean bill of health! :)

Preventative care is soo important! But I can totally understand why you might feel anxious using it, if you were used to going without and having to pay for every little thing. It's hard to shake that old feeling, even if you logically know you can do it now. I would definitely find a doctor you feel comfortable talking to about your anxieties, they'll probably be empathetic and able to help you.
