No kidding. It's pretty telling that it took almost 10+ years before the biggest Star Wars fansite on the internet finally allowed slash/femslash on its forums/fic archives. And if Fanlore's accounts are any indication, The Phantom Menace brought about a huge wave of slash fandom for Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon, but that all was long before places like LiveJournal, Tumblr, etc. I sometimes wonder if that wave was the reason why slash was banned at TFN... I dunno.

The 'make Juhani bisexual' mods for KOTOR skeeved me out a whole lot, because she was the first known/openly queer character in the Star Wars EU. IIRC, most people only barely tolerated the two married Mandalorian dudes from Karen Traviss' Mando stories, solely because they were "canon". Now we've got a couple more queer characters, and while I think Chuck Wendig can be full of himself sometimes, he's probably not too far off the mark at calling out the homophobia in some of the reactions to his book, simply because SW fandom has a history of that kind of attitude over the years.

Oh, oh.. then there was the whole shitstorm over same-sex flirting options in the first expansion for The Old Republic; the Star Wars MMORPG (by BioWare), a few years back. The homophobia was rampant, with fans saying they didn't want "teh gay" to infect Star Wars, jumping to all kinds of conclusions that characters would suddenly want to flirt with you unprompted (even though said choices are clearly marked, which proves nobody knows basic reading comprehension anymore), etc. I wasn't into the game at the time, but I caught the backdraft via a couple friends at the time.

Turns out, the flirting options were pretty paltry (one was a female bisexual for Republic players, the other was a male only for Imperials, but he got taken out out of the story halfway through. Neither one are referred to or mentioned ever again at all after that.) and there was mined dialogue that proved s/s romances were originally supposed to be in the vanilla game, but got taken out for unknown reasons, despite the fact EA swore up and down they care about queer players. We later got legitimate SGRs in Lana, Theron, and Koth, but by that point most people just couldn't muster up enough energy to complain, lmao.

However, I remember the other shitstorms that would happen on r/swtor, where people would get super salty at the mere suggestion that some returning companions could have same-sex romance/flirt options this time around in the newest expansion. I wonder how those people felt when it became known female characters could now flirt with Kaliyo (a companion to the Imperial Agent class and a het romance option for male players in vanilla), lmao.

tl;dr: Yeah, I agree that SW fandom has a large undercurrent of homophobia. It's slowly starting to turn around after TFA... with an emphasis on slowly.
