Someone just commented they're tempted to finish one of my fics....

[personal profile] kallanda_lee 2016-05-17 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
And I honestly do not know how to feel about it? Like on one hand it's flattering, but it's also weird - And I always tend to reply to comments, but I don't really know what to say to this?

I'd be fascinated to see where they took the story and how different it was from what I had in mind.

Let them do it. It's a fanfic and you like those, right? You don't have to read it, but it is a huge compliment.

"Thanks, I'm flattered but I'd rather not pass this story off to someone else."

or

"Sure go ahead! Could you please make it clear in your author's note that I have had no input in the continuation?"

Being that it's fanfic, I don't really think Kallanda has the right to deny another person from picking it up and running with it. Well, she(?) has the right to make the request. But it's a pretty hypocritical request, and if a fanfic author tried to stop me from writing fic in the universe of their fic, I'd probably laugh and ignore the fuck out of them.

However, asking that the person let readers know she has had no input in this other person's story is completely reasonable and a good idea.

Is your fic a fanfic or an original fic? If it is the former, then accept it with the same grace as the creators of the original material, if the latter say you are flattered but you don't really know.

It's a fanfic.

Sounds fully within the spirit of fanfiction! You don't have to respond to them, but honestly, I'd give them my blessing and feel really flattered, and frankly, I think it'd be hypocritical to try to disallow someone from doing that.

Depends on whether or not you'd be curious to see what they did with it? I mean if it'd bother you just tell them so. If it wouldn't, tell them that.

I'm not thrilled about the idea, I just feel like it would be hypocrisy to stop them?

How about ask them if they would be willing to write it and show it to you privately, and you can approve it if you want to?

You have the right to say no. If you don't want them to, definitely tell them no. Don't let a reluctant yes to something you didn't really want come back to irritate you later when they post a continuation you don't like or want to be associated with. Plenty of fanfic authors and fanartists take control of their work by asking people not to do this or that with their creations.

Well uhhhh

Is it a finished fic itself, or something you stopped toward the end? Do you have plans to finish it yourself? I agree it is a little weird, but is it something you wouldn't mind relinquishing "ownership" of?

Also, "tempted" doesn't necessarily mean they will definitely... but then, they might.

Its an unfinished WIP, that I always said I'd finish, but realistically haven't worked on in ages.

Then that's just weird

I'm going to go against the grain here and admit that I'd be bothered by someone finishing one of my fics. Even as I say that, I fully realize the hypocrisy, but I can't help how I'd feel. For me, the weird feeling is degrees of separation, I suppose. If I wrote a book or something, and someone did fanfic for it, I'd be fine with it? And even if they sent me a link or something, I wouldn't read it (for legal reasons if nothing else). But with fic of fic, it almost feels like there's this expectation of being pleased and linking to it because we're all one big community, etc. I'm not sure I'm explaining this very well.

sa

If anything, I'd say to them that you'd rather not hand the story over to anyone else, but if they do decide to do fic about it, you really can't read it because you don't want anything to influence you when you finish it. And they can write it without your permission, obviously, but you don't have to link back to it or acknowledge it. I mean, I haven't read this person's message to you, so I have no idea what type of response they're wanting other than 'yes.' I mean, are they just hoping for a 'yes' or do they (even to themselves) expect you to add an A/N saying 'so and so has finished this story! go check it out!' etc.

Same. I know it's a tad hypocritical, but I wouldn't like it if someone took it upon themselves to "finish" one of my WIPs. For starters, I doubt they'd do a good job at it, because the good writers usually have more sense than to attempt something like this. But more importantly, it'd be awkward as hell because there's no way I would read or endorse it, yet my name would be attached to whatever crap the person coughed up.

You are, that's pretty much exactly how I feel.

Re: Someone just commented they're tempted to finish one of my fics....

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 03:30 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, I always feel that's sort of a douchey thing for people to do. It's like they're passive-aggressively prodding you about unfinished WIPs while at the same kind kinda sorta maybe asking for permission without having the guts to really straight up ask you.

Re: Someone just commented they're tempted to finish one of my fics....

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 03:35 am (UTC)(link)
I have a couple long-abandoned WIPs. I'd feel pretty uncomfortable about someone jumping in to "finish" them. Whatever they wrote wouldn't be finishing MY story, it'd be making up an ending to suit their own tastes.

I think if I got a comment like this I'd say something along the lines of me being thrilled at the idea of fics inspired by my own, while also trying to make it clear that I'm Not Comfortable with people writing an ending to my work?

Sort of like how I'd be comfortable with someone using the basic plot/tropes of my fic as a prompt, but not comfortable with them copying wholesale certain passages.

Re: Someone just commented they're tempted to finish one of my fics....

(Anonymous) 2016-05-18 09:04 am (UTC)(link)
it's not hypocritical. a fanfic writer is not a direct rival a book/movie/game writer. even if it gets adapted into a book it'll have enough originality to stand on its own.

another fanfic writer is taking away your audience for your own story ending. if they want to write a spin-off they should defer to you.

Being on both sides of this equation (as a fanfic writer and knowing there are some fanfics in my fandom that have been unfinished for over a decade), my perspective is this:

As a writer, if someone asked to finish one of my fics, I would give them permission, but forewarn them that anything they write might be "Jossed". ie. make it clear to them that their ending is a FAN ending, not the official one. And my official ending may not jive with their fan one. I also wouldn't read that fan ending until I was finished with my own fic.

As someone tempted to finish WiPs (but I have not yet done so), would I be disappointed if a writer said "No, you can't"? Sure, but I personally would respect their wishes. Or at the very least, if I just couldn't let it go, I'd turn it into drawerfic. That way I wrote "an" ending, but it wouldn't intrude at all on the original author's work.

The one I'm most severely tempted to finish is so tempting because I've attempted to contact the author numerous times, but they only have one public point of contact (I've been trying through fanfiction dot net PM, since they have no site, e-mail, etc.) and it's been over a decade since they vanished from the Internet without a trace.

Ultimately, how you should feel is the way you DO feel. Everyone reacts differently. I know this might not be much help, but maybe a different perspective might help you process the request.
