Ella Enchanted

The book, not the movie. Who loved it and the ideas/worldbuilding in it?

I adore that book so much. I got it at a book fair in the sixth grade, so in the decade since I've read it so many times the cover fell off. I loved it so much that I read Fairest by the same author, and that was ok but not nearly as good.

I love the languages of all the different races. I could stand to see more protagonists who enjoy learning languages.

I know, right? I think Ella Enchanted was what first instilled a love of linguistics in us!

I haven't read it in ages, but I really loved it as a kid. I liked the languages, and the idea of Ella's obedience being a curse.

There were also two scenes I liked, one where she's at her mother's funeral (I think) and sees some animals on a rug moving, and the one where she's walking around in some empty place and finds the glass slippers.

I used to read that book all the time! I actually really liked the romance element...

Yes! It was one of the only books where even as a kid I loved and was interested in the romance.

What an amazing book. I really need to get myself a copy and reread it again.

I loved this book for all of seventh grade. I went around telling people it was my favorite book for at least a year. It was also how I initially met one of my best friends, who I'm still close with today. She loved it too, and we got talking.

I was so, so into the romance in it, too, which was fairly rare for me at the time. (And I actually love the idea of a young Hugh Dancy as Char, even though pretty much everything about the movie was an utter travesty.)

One of my fave books of all time. I love the little details in the worldbuilding, Ella is a genuinely charming and intelligent character, the romance is great! I love how her curse was handled. i only saw the movie once, back when it came out, and blocked it from my mind it was so bad. I almost wanna watch it again as an adult to see just how bad it was.

LOVED that book. Helped instill a love of linguistics in us, which we majored in in college. I also actually LIKED Char, which is unusual. The curse of obedience is even scarier to me as an adult than it was in childhood!

Loved that book. To this day sometimes I think about how she would deal with advertisements if she existed in the modern world.

It's been forever since I read it, but I remember being incredibly emotional at the ending because I was so into it and that doesn't happen too often for me.
