Celibacy has been valued for basically thousands of years.

That's a silly myth. The only time celibacy has ever widely been valued is for members of religious orders. People have always known they needed to reproduce. Why do you think arranged marriages were so popular and being a spinster was considered the worst thing ever?

It is absolutely not a myth. Just looking at medieval Christianity, sex was constantly spouted as being bad and there were so many religious restrictions about when and how one could have sex, and condemning even feelings of lust, that even married couples could be encouraged to only have sex when absolutely necessary (and the "restrictions" made it banned almost every day). Obviously in practice, people had loads of sex, but chastity was still ABSOLUTELY considered a virtue.

Obviously people "knew they had to reproduce", that doesn't mean everyone did. Even in noble families, children were often given away to the church because they needed to get rid of extra heirs. Arranged marriages were political institutions and plenty arranged marriages never resulted in children - and plenty of wives and husbands both left the marriage to join religious orders or otherwise chose to abstain from sex.

Are you trying to argue that "if chastity was a virtue WHY did people have babies?" because I don't even get what you're trying to say. People will have sex and have babies, but that has nothing to do with chastity not being valued.

Chastity was valued in an unwed woman but women at that time were expected to get married and have kids. At that point, chastity was out the window.

I do think there was SOMETIMES room for people not to be judged if they went unmarried, but not all people and not in all times.

For instance, many women had no choice about marriage. Whether they wanted to have sex or not, they had to. It fucking sucked.
