Also: sometimes the the person the word applies to caring is literally the point of needing the word. People like being able to know who they are and that others like them exist! Wow!

And in demisexuals' case, they see everyone else getting sparkly labels and sympathy because they're legit oppressed minorities who JUST won the right to be legally recognized, so they had to go invent some bullshit to get in on the party and have a way to bitch and piss and moan about how their lives are SO HARD because they only want to fuck people they really, really like (you know, like MOST OF THE GODDAMN POPULATION).
