Uh... you do know that people still do remakes of copyrighted things, right? (See: Marvel/DC universe in all their various mediums, Tolkien estate, reboots of cult favorites like the Ghostbusters, Mad Max, etc.) None of those things are in the public domain, so getting rid of public domain wouldn't change that at all.

All that getting rid of the public domain would do is make sure that copyright holders get rich and anyone who wants to create anything based upon those properties would have to pay on the nose.
