So those are basically Chuck Taylors, right?

Do those not count as sneakers? Oops.

I think OP was drawing a distinction between sneakers and running sneakers. I think. It's very odd to me.

I think OP is distinguishing canvas shoes from modern athletic shoes specially designed for things like running, working out, and playing particular sports. I feel like "sneaker" is shifting to mean more the latter only, and canvas shoes are just "casual shoes."

Huh, really? I'd use "tennis shoe" to mean a more athletic sneaker but I've never heard "sneaker" used in such a specific way. I'd be that's a highly regional thing though. (Maybe a UK vs. US thing? especially since DW is UK)

I also haven't heard the term "canvas shoe" much before now. Everyone I know would just call the shoes in that example "chucks" if they're being specific, or "sneakers" if they're not, I think.

I live in the US, but a lot of my friends and co-workers are into things like running marathons and they tend not to own anything they call a "sneaker" that isn't a special athletic shoe, so I have no idea how widespread that practice is.

I say "canvas shoes" because when I was a kid, you could get these girl's shoes that were sort of like low-rise Chucks and everyone called them "canvas shoes" because the uppers were made of canvas (which made them kind of terrible in the rain). I don't remember having any knowledge of Chuck Taylors until the 90s, but my parents tended to steer me away from name-brands when I was a kid so I was unaware of a lot of things.

Huh, and I am not familiar with those shoes. I guess it's a regional/age thing maybe?
