Gorilla, or Orang, or any great ape. I want to know if they really do think of us as bullying assholes. There was a BBC show about a zoo last week and it mentioned they couldn't put cameras in the gorilla house because one of the gorillas recognised cameras and knew we used them to spy on them. I can't help thinking that if they are capable of making that deductive leap then maybe we should not be treating them like animals. It made me feel really uncomfortable about the way we treat the higher primates, and maybe some octopus species too. Perhaps we need to re-examine how we define personhood.

I was going to say the great apes as well. Plus, it would also give us insight into our own human history. /armchair anthropologist

Spoilers: we already do talk to great apes via sign language.

Most of the time they don't really have much to say, but they can genuinely understand our grief so ...that's something.
