So I spent this entire movie freaking out. I had avoided all spoilers for it and so got to enjoy things like Surprise!Martin Freeman. I've been complaining about rebooting Spider Man AGAIN but this kid is just so young and adorable and actually looks like a teenage boy that if they force another series on us I might actually enjoy it. I'm still riding the emotional high, this was a lot better than I expected it to be. The internet was right, though, it was more an Avengers movie than a captain america movie.

It actually felt like a Captain America to me. Like, there were so many characters but I still felt like the focus was on Steve Rogers. Then again, I was just amazed that Tony Stark didn't chew the scenery and take over every scene like he usually does.

Also, how awesome that Peter Parker has an Aunt May that is actually age appropriate? :D

I wore an Iron Man Tshirt so I'm a bit biased there.

I thought she was great but it was jarring because the Toby Maguire trilogy was "my series". Mostly I was thrilled that Peter didn't look 28 this time.

How was she age-appropriate? In the comics she has white hair....?

She is the aunt of a 17-18 year old. It is really odd that she has always been portrayed by people that look like grandmothers. I guess Peter's parents could have had him when they were very old or there could be some huge age gap between siblings, but Tomei looks like what you imagine when you think of the aunt of a 17 year old.

I get that she has white hair in the comics, but it is even weird looking in there to me.

Well, but, not...automatically? I mean - aunts and uncles in my family at least are older, and there could have been a big age-gap between Peter's dad and his brother - there's some kids at my work (17, 18, 19) who have one year old siblings because their parents had a 'surprise' kid.

In the comics she's a *very* old woman, wrinkly and whatnot. It never seemed strange to me.

/me squishes you

ONE OF US ONE OF US.

I disliked that the shoved in a ^part of Spidar-Man origin story, but the actor/character itself was lovely (I'd just have preferred him in another film)

Yay squishes! I was so nervous about thud because Winter Soldier just didn't catch me but I walked out adoring Bucky as well.

I'm not thrilled that they're rebooting him for the second time in like five years but the kid did great and was adorable.

I'm happy with amount of Bucky screentime (though I'd have preferred more hugs or an actually heartfelt conversation).

Yeah the movie definitely lacked conversations. I feel like most of the plot could have been solved by stubborn people calming down and listening.

Spidey was the best Spidey of all new iterations of the character. I say that as a fan of the comics (at least to the extent that I have read more of the Spiderman comics than anything else, probably).

The problem for me was the giant goddamn deus ex machina of the end conflict.

How the fuck was there a random camera in the middle of nowhere to catch Bucky killing the Starks? How did Cap know about it before Tony?
Presumably, Bucky told him something off screen, but if that was the case how the hell did Bucky remember in time to tell him if he couldn't remember anything he did while being a sleeper agent? (remember: when he comes to after his code words are spoken he immediately asks what he did)

It's just... I just couldn't.

I have any answer to the camera one. I actually watched a shit bootleg version just to get this screenshot.

http://i.imgur.com/0uQaQFX.png

He didn't crash them in the middle of nowhere. He crashed them into/near a fence surrounding something. It has barbed wire AND signs (most liked POSTED: KEEP OUT! ones). I expect it is either some kind of building, radar/telephone tower/system, electrical system hub, whatever they had back in 1991 (if it was today, I'd say a cellphone tower). Whatever it is, they would likely have a camera recording in case anything was tampered with or it was broken into.

About the second point, Steve had Bucky's personal files plus a lot of information was released by Natasha in the Winter Soldier. I expect Steve knows way more about Bucky's missions and what he did than anyone else alive.

Dang, when I watched that in the theatre that shot was so dark you couldn't see any fence or anything. It was like ...kay, floating camera.

At least that makes more sense.

Ehm, no...Cap knew because of the Winter Soldier file at the end of TWS. This is the point where is does sort of show its the third film, not a standalone.

The camera is weird, I agree, but it's more impacting on screen than if he'd just have taken a look at the file.

Re: Obligatory CA: Civil War thread

[personal profile] herpymcderp 2016-05-21 03:08 am (UTC)(link)
In my defense I didn't really watch TWS. Or well... I did sort of but it was drunk and at a gathering. I caught about 3% of the plot.

I just have a deep unending love for Toby Maguire and his ridiculous trilogy. I never latched on to Andrew Garfield because the reboot seemed pointless/

I'm still not entirely clear how Cap knew, but with Bucky I got the impression that it takes time for his memory of events to come back.

He knew because it was in his file at the end of Winter Soldier (the file Nat dug up).

In The Winter Soldier when Steve and Natasha are in the bunker being monologued by Zola's brain machine, it was heavily implied that Bucky was behind the deaths of the Starks.

lol that doesn't even sound remotely familiar to me. Maybe I should actually attempt to watch it seriously.

(mostly I just looked up when there was a cool action sequence)

For me it was very much an Avengers movie that tried to be a Cap stand alone film but ultimately failed, I still enjoyed it but I am also somewhat bitter that I'll never get my third Cap movie now.

But, T'Challa was my favourite thing, I loved him and I want him in everything. His suit was cool, he got an actual arc through the movie that made me sympathise with him outside of looking awesome while kicking butt. He is my new MCU love and I want his movie now.

MCU Spidey? Eh, I don't really care, and I'm a comics Spiderman fan. I think I'm just really burnt out on Spiderman movies at this point so the new movie has got to do something different and interesting to hoik me because right now I don't care. Though at least they have an actual teenager playing Peter, that's something.

But hey maybe the trailer will look awesome and it'll perk me up towards it.

I'm torn between mild irritation that it was an Avengers film and not a Cap film, and relief because I didn't actually care for the first two Cap films but loved the Avengers.

T'Challa was definitely one of the best parts.

Yeah, my problem is that we JUST did new Spiderman, are you kidding me. But at the same time Toby Maguire looked nearly thirty and Andrew Garfield looked younger than that but not by much.

Cap is one of my fave MCU characters so I am mildly annoyed by the whole deal, Civil War was fun but it should have been an Avengers movie. But I got Black Panther out of it so I can't complain too much.

I was expecting to like him but I was so blown away with how much I adored the fucker.

Yeah, if we hadn't had the Amazing Spiderman movies I don't think I'd mind so much tbh, but it feels like we just did this(even though it's been a few years) so I'm in the stage of really finding it hard to give a shit.

Also the 15 min segway in the middle of the movie for a Spiderman intro did not help at all, that dragged like fuck.

I avoided spoilers too and I agree so much with you about Spiderman. I love that there wasn't another origin story, he was just there.

I can't wait for it to come out on bluray so I can watch it all the time.

Yes! They just brought him in. Though at the same time I am baffled because Tony Stark's brilliant plan is to bring in a high school kid in a onesie he sewed himself to fight seasoned, trained professionals. Including a literal war hero. Tony Stark is my favorite character, but please, no one give him a child.

I know right? And how he totally lied to Aunt May to get Spidey? Right, not trusting you with a child!
