Re: What is it with the obsession with making sure kids see sex???
I mean, really, you can argue all damn day what's appropriate for children, but let's not pretend Hunger Games was a happy funtimes cartoon violence fest.
Re: What is it with the obsession with making sure kids see sex???
Then that one alein dude who was freakin' nightmare fuel IN GENERAL and I think was the one that fused with Ax at the end of the series.
Then the Andelites dropped a freakin' virus that killed off nearly an entire species because the Yeerks found them.
Or Axc's "friend" who ended up morphed and stuck in a TAXXON morph, a beast that was ALWAYS hungry and would cannibalize themselves and he nearly did that and and...
Also, PTSD FROM THE FUCKING WAR TO BEGIN WITH. I MEAN, THESE KIDS WERE 13 OR SO WHEN THEY STARTED AND WERE 16/17 BY THE END OF THE SERIES. That series didn't end happily AT ALL. The two major OTPs of that series DIDN'T get happy endings at all. One just fell apart because Jake couldn't cope well and Cassie just tried to move on and the other one ended when RACHEL FUCKING KILLED HERSELF TO KILL HER COUSIN AND THE YEERK THAT WAS IN HIS HEAD BECAUSE THEY COULD NEVER GET THE YEERK SEPARATED FROM HIM and her LI, Tobias, was stuck in his Hawk morph and WAS gonna morph back into his normal human self to BE with her, but NOPE. He took it so badly he basically went into seclusion and it's hinted at that he basically went feral and yeah.
Kids can handle a lot, but you STILL have to take into consideration what is appropriate or not.
But the constant black and white view of either not censoring at all or censoring ALL TEH THINGS just...doesn't take into account what kids can and can't actually handle.
It's so stupid.
Re: What is it with the obsession with making sure kids see sex???
Like, I've mentioned on here before that I come from a pretty fucked-up rapey background. As a child (and I mean, eight to twelve age), we obsessively read adult memoirs of sexual assault and incest, not to mention a lot of Piers Anthony's creepy pedo stuff, and I think it was because we were trying to come to terms with what had happened to us. We lived in this bizarro twilight zone where rape was happening to us on a regular basis, but nobody would ever discuss it. So we jumped straight to adult lit that WOULD, even if they did it in really awful ways.
I'm not saying it was at all developmentally appropriate, but well. Our life wasn't being developmentally appropriate either. Nowadays, at least, there's more resources out there... man, I wish I'd had Scarleteen's Safety Plan as a teen.
So yeah, I have a lot of complicated but intense feelings about what kids can and can't handle. I mean, it's definitely a very hard line to walk, and I can understand why people fight about it. It's very raw personal territory for so many people, you know?
