Thirding (or whatever) Martha Wells--especially her Ships of Air series--and Louise McMaster Bujold.

An oldie but goodie is Tanith Lee.

Also consider Sarah Monette and Ekaterina Sedia. There's an older series written by someone whose name escapes me, called the Gandalara Cycle, which is amazeballs. (Written by a man--not sure if that matters to you?)

Spare yourself Anne Bishop and Cassandra Clare. The latter's a hacky plagiarist, the other is just so overhyped for being, honestly, pretty middle of the road stuff.
