Do you have an interesting/unusual background?

(Anonymous) 2016-05-21 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Any background that wouldn't be considered typical, first world, never moved, fairly inconspicuous, etc.?

Like, were you a military brat and moved around a lot as a kid, even to foreign countries? Are you from a country where you had a poorer and less privileged life? Was your family part of a weird religious cult which you escaped from? Are you very rich and grew up with a mansion, butler, private school?

Tell me! I was thinking about how boring my life is and am wondering if anyone is less boring than me.

I was born in a third world country, but raised in America since I was very young. My parents are a mixed-race and mixed-nationality couple.

Where, if I may ask? Do you have any memories of it, or were you too young when you moved?

Bangladesh, and I have memories of it, but mainly only from a few temporary (like, around 1 month long) visits when I was older, not from when I was actually living there (we moved when I was 3).

Heh. Well, let's see, I grew up in a family with multiple pedophiles, a possible murder or suicide (it was never clear which and happened loooong before I was born), multiple teen pregnancies, and a cousin who died before thirty from blood poisoning. (RIP buddy. Never expected to survive you.) And that's just the parts I KNOW about.

Me, I'm a certified loony who managed to get free of all that by burning my bridges and becoming homeless, then scraped my way up to my current welfare queen existence making mental health comics and writing speculative fiction.

Oh, and I've talked to two little tin cult leaders from my online community who were terrible people. The more famous one was Neo. Thankfully, I must not have interested them, because I know I would've been EXTREMELY susceptible to them at the time.

So yeah I think I've had an interesting go of things.

Oh wow. Glad you've gotten through (and hopefully away from) all of that.

I have a weird fascination with cults, but I don't think I've ever come across one irl (or even personally online). As far as I know, my area isn't well known for fringe religious sects or anything.

Yes, thank god. I still get passive-aggressive emails from one of them, but I'm pretty okay. I feel really bad for my little brother who's still stuck there; I suspect he has a lot more going on under the surface than I know, and wish I could help him, but... well, after the last fight, I had to go. I just hope he manages to find something better, you know?

Yeah, my subculture online has a MASSIVE cult problem. They all revolve around fandom--channeling characters and persuading other folks they're involved in big astral battles for reality and such. *shudder* It's one of those things where everyone knows about it but nobody talks about it, and so I've been researching and learning to try and make a big series of posts and stuff about it, to try and warn folks away. (Especially since Neo left his archives open to the public and seems to be gone, so I can do an easy run-down of him without risking much.)

Yeeeeeesh, LB. You really have had an interesting go of things. I'm glad you're away from that situation.

Yeah. At least I can say with all honesty that my life has never been dull. And I'm glad I'm away too.

I was raised by a single father who raised four girls and one boy (mostly) on his own.

Also, grew up poor as fuck surrounded by bikers and my extended family is pretty white trash (amazing considering they are all filthy Yankees).

Oh man, my family had bikers too. (Though not sure if you meant your family had bikers, or you were just in a biker-heavy community.)

As in all of the adults I grew up around were part of the biker community. My father was a part of a fairly large bike club when he was younger, so he sometimes still dealt with them. Had a couple of scary moments growing up but it wasn't all bad.

My parents owned a convenience store from the time I was 9 until I was 20 ish and we lived in an apartment above the store. From around age 16, when my parents went away for the weekend, I'd be left in charge, had to open/close and all that. We were never broken into. I'm pretty sure that the fact my step dad was also a gunsmith helped with that.

My extended family has a long history of emotional abuse, mental illness, and crippling alcoholism, but my immediate family escaped the worst of it. I've only interacted with that mess secondhand.

My maternal great-grandfather was an ambulance surgeon on Coney Island - and according to some family stories, one of his patients was General Tom Thumb [I believe he and his wife came over my great-grandparents' house for tea once]. And also on the maternal side of the tree, I believe my great-grandmother turned down a chance to sing at the Met [she would have been the chorus, from what I've been told, due to her age] and her reasoning was that she wanted to raise her family.

[Then there's the lovely bit where my grandmother screwed up the family tree, which was because when she was born her older brothers were in their twenties. My aforementioned great-grandfather had to have a colleague of his tell his wife that she was having another baby]

My brother has WAGR syndrome, which is p rare. I think there's a few hundred cases worldwide. He's blind and developmentally delayed, functions on a 3-5 year old level. He's the best!
